Who wants to be a Millionare, Maths version

Hi everyone, I’m back after such a long hiatus. For today’s entry I will be talking about my life as a Mathematics teacher J and how I use technology in my class. Stay tuned.

This year is my first-year teaching Mathematics form 5, so everything is new for me as I did not have the sources to begin with. One of the technologies that I usually implement in my class is by using power point. There are various ways to use power point. I usually use power point to save time on writing questions in class and at the same time to save the space on whiteboard for explanation.

The template 😊

For today’s class, we will be playing Who wants to be a Millionaire  J by using power point as my teaching aid. The objective of today’s class is to make sure the students are able to answer various type of questions on Variation topic. I usually use this kind of activity as preparation for Formative Test 1 or to make the class more fun J.

This kind of activity is suitable to use for topics that will be asked in Paper 1 which is the objective paper. The students will be given 1 to 1 and a half minutes to answer the questions given. This will help them for time management during exam.

Usually this game is played individually

Usually we played this game individually however for today’s class the students will be playing in pairs. My reason for this is that I want the students to help each other because explaining will help you learn better. I personally choose the pairs based on the results and their chemistry in class for example, Isaac is paired with Max as Max understand it better when Isaac explain to him rather than other people.

The student will answer the questions in pair and stand up to show their answer.

Usually I do not have any problem with using projector in my class but today, the projector decided to be broken prior of my class and it will take a while for the school to repair it as the technician is on leave. Thank God, the next class which is 5 Brilliant are going to the lab at that time, so I asked them if I can borrow their class for that period. Luckily, we manage to get into a class that have running projector J. Yeayyyyyyy

This is one of the problems when using projector as we could not do anything if it decided to be broken but alas everything has solution J

When everything is already set up. We started the game J this is the first time this class will be playing this game as I usually played it with lower forms. It took me 5 minutes to explain it to the students on how the game works, what they need to do and what they’ll be learning through this J.

Everyone is pretty hype for the game J this is a great start. After we finished the first question, I asked the students what they felt about the game. All of them like it and said it was fun, but they said that the music makes them nervous and anxious. J I can totally relate with that as while they are playing, I can see that some of them get very nervous when the music is on because they know that they are running out of time. But then I explain it to them that the music is just an indicator, they should not be nervous about that. The amount of time that they get is enough for them to answer the question.

Then we continued playing the game till the last questions. Everyone was having so much fun. There are a few questions towards the end that some of them get it wrong, so I asked one of the students to explain it to their friends and I will add on if needed.

James Janting is explaining question 7

Aziz is explaining question 8

However, they did not have any representative to win the final prize because the final 5 pairs managed only to answer correctly 9 out of 10 questions. The last question is the higher order thinking skill (HOTS) kind of question. I then explained it to them on whiteboard on how to answer the question. What key word that they need to highlight for them to be able to answer the question. At the end of the game, they realised that they all understand this topic well but have problem when it comes to problem solving questions.

One more obstacle that I need to get through is that some students did not see the questions well, so I need to give them extra time. This happens as the class was during noon which is so bright. Although we did close the curtain it still effects the slide as there are glares.

As conclusion, I can totally use this game again for my class as the students are having fun learning J However, for next class I think I will not use class and book teaching room with more projector so that all of the students can see the questions well.
